‘Knowledge is power’ and in the case of people suffering from poor body image learning how your body works, how to release and relax, and how to stand with ease, and walk with grace is the first step in healing the pain of living with a body you do not like. We will combine hands on work with movement education and discussion about body image. The discussion will include themes of learning to practice non-judgment, understanding the way a body is meant to look, and a critique of the current body standards. We will use writing and expressive arts to understand the issues which may lay beneath our body image and come up with a realistic plan for having the body you want. This work combines the empowering effects of feeling good in your body with learning more about how your body works and is meant to look.
- to begin feeling comfortable in your body through acceptance and education
- to understand the inner and outer pressures placed on women and girls about their body
- to gain physical confidence about the body by mastering postural and movement lessons
- to understand the fact about real bodies vs. media made bodies
- to begin perceiving the body as a positive source of well being, self knowledge, and pleasure
- to establish optimal alignment and balance in the structure: (a goal worthy of 6 sessions)
- to open the chest, increase breath and the ability to 'stand tall'
- To experience the wisdom of the body through touch and embodied dialogue
- To feel good in your body and enjoy
- to establish the relationship between posture and feeling good
- to establish the relationship between posture and looking good
- to learn to move with ease and grace
- to learn to enjoy the body through movement
Upon request Sarah runs small groups for women and children struggling with body image. The groups use discussion, expressive arts, movement, education and the benefits of community to facilitate healing and wellness. During the groups we do everything from discussing our weight and size to cardio-yoga and dance.
